Schizophrenia
Any one of a large group of severe mental disorders typified by gross distortion of reality, disturbance in language and breakdown of thought processes, perceptions and emotions. Delusion and hallucinations are usual, as apathy, confusion, incontinence and strange behaviour. No single cause is known but genetic factors are probably important. Drug therapy has improved the outlook markedly over recent years.
